PIR insulation for external walls

PIR insulation for external walls can help reduce heat transfer through a suitable wall construction while keeping the insulation layer compact. It may be considered where available space is limited or where continuity at junctions needs careful attention. The board facing and method of installation must suit the particular wall system; a product intended for one build-up is not automatically suitable for another. Moisture movement, fire performance, airtightness and the external finish all influence the specification. ecoPIR can discuss the application and provide current product information for review by the person responsible for the building design.

Details make the wall perform

External wall build-up showing a PIR insulation layer between structural and protective layers.

The performance of an insulated wall depends on the whole assembly. Window reveals, lintels, floor edges and the connection to the roof can interrupt the insulation layer and should be detailed together.

Choose the board for the wall system

  • Identify the wall construction and external finish.
  • Confirm the required thermal performance and available space.
  • Check moisture and condensation behaviour across the build-up.
  • Use compatible fixings, joint details and protective layers.
  • Assess fire requirements for the complete wall system.

Share wall drawings, the insulation area and preferred thickness with ecoPIR. For insulated metal cladding, see sandwich panels.
